Curses

Anonymous asked this question on 5/31/2001:

hello my question is this...some other form of Christian told me that there is power in the tongue to the point that if you say something it will happen....for instance if I said "when I start new jobs I always get sick".....and As a result i keep getting sick before new jobs.....what do you think of this

: she also spoke of this as a "word curse" like you were cursing yourself or you could curse others by saying these things to them

: she said some one came in to her church and was putting curses on people so she caught a cold...

: what do you think of this?

from a catholic stance what is the teaching on this?

does GOD not protect us from these things? I mean isnt GODS will for you above the words of some other? What if you dont know of things yet praise GOD everyday wont he protect you with you even knowing it. won't he protect you without asking him for specifics?

I never hear of any of this in catholic teachings can you please explain why not.., and other then asking God for his protection what do you do to avoid these things...and how do you know if they have been done to you? thank you.

Greetings:

May the Holy Spirit give you strength and enthusiasm in order to witness your faith.

The Catholic Church has some precise teaching regarding the problem you describe: superstition is incompatible with Christian faith because it shows that you think that there are powers besides God and outside His providence. Or, at least, you think that God doesn't love you because things don't happen the way you want.

I would like you to remember a verse from Romans 8 " 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. "

So if you love Him you are secure. The Good Book is the truth.

Then why the fears?

The human heart needs to believe.

As Pope John Paul teaches in his "The Mission of the Redemptor" that there is in the human heart something only God can fulfill. It's the realm of faith, the realm of trusting God that He is your Father who gave His only Son for you. So there is a proportion between faith and superstition. The more faith the less superstition. Persons that fear curses and spells etc. may be almost sure that their faith in Christ is weak. That is why so many "unbelievers" believe in Spiritism and Satanism.

We fear the unknown. John 6 " and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, "It is I; dont be afraid." and 14" 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. ", Love expels fear.

So, what is the solution? Grow in faith. Let yourself be convinced by the Word. Praise the Lord for everything that happens because He has willed it so because He loves you. He even distills blessings out of our sins. And pray for those in error because they are prisoners of superstitions. They don't know the Lord.

If you are Catholic I urge you If you aren't doing it to go to confession and receive holy communion at least every Sunday and become a member of some group of your parish that can help you to grow in faith. Moreover, pray that the Holy Spirit may guide you. At this moment, I'm praying for you.

I leave you with Romans 8 " 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against Gods elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

"For Your sake we are killed all day long;

We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter."

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. "

See?

God bless you
